Cuesta College’s women’s basketball team fell to Modesto 68-65 in overtime Thursday night in the Cougars’ first game of the season at the Los Positas Tournament.

Despite being outshot 53 percent to 32 percent and down by eight points with six minutes left in regulation, the Cougars stormed back to take a five-point lead with 2 1⁄2 minutes to go.

However a critical non-call on a potential traveling violation, Cougars coach  Ron Barba said, allowed the Pirates to tie the score with five seconds to go at 57 apiece to force overtime.

Former Atascadero High star Alyssa Palma led the Cougars with 26 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Former Morro Bay standout Aria Johnson had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Cuesta plays today at 1 p.m. against Marin.
