An Atascadero police officer responded to an emergency late Tuesday night that he won’t soon forget.

Officer Luca Benedetti helped deliver a baby in the police station’s parking lot after a woman and her husband stopped there for help, according to a news release from the department.

About 11:25 p.m., Atascadero resident Chris Devroede entered the police station’s lobby asking for help. His wife, Orah Devroede, was in their vehicle, ready to give birth, he told a dispatcher.

Benedetti, who was in the station at the time, ran out to the parking lot and started talking to Orah Devroede, who was having severe contractions. The baby was “coming out,” she informed Benedetti.

Benedetti asked if she could move to the back seat so she could lie down, and he and Chris Devroede helped her do so. There, the baby was born, and Benedetti noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s lower extremities, according to the news release.

He was able to untangle the umbilical cord, and the baby, a girl, began crying. Benedetti placed the baby into Orah Devroede’s arms as other police officers and firefighters arrived to help.

The family was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital, where their 8 pound, 6 ounce baby girl is doing well.

It was the first time in the Atascadero Police Department’s 32 years that a baby was born at the police station.
