Atascadero's football team stuns Palmdale in playoff opener

Greyhounds shut down Northern Division’s top seed for three quarters

Atascadero High’s football team pulled off an outstanding performance Friday night, upsetting undefeated Palmdale 26-7 on the road in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Palmdale was the division’s top-seeded team for the playoffs.

Palmdale’s only touchdown came on a Wesley Gitchuway scoring reception in the first quarter. 

The Greyhounds (5-6) answered in the second with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Robbie Berwick to 

Dominic Chance. Berwick added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 36 rushing yards and 135 passing yards.

Atascadero’s Ethan Hicks scored two rushing touchdowns and had 94 rushing yards.

Jonathan Torres ran for 72 yards on seven carries, and Izaiah Cooks rushed for 45 on nine carries for Atascadero. The Greyhounds finished with 265 rushing yards and 400 total yards.

 “Our defense did a great job and we minimized turnovers on offense,” Atascadero coach Vic Copper said. “It was an all-around team effort.”
