The normally quiet neighborhood of Wood Drive and adjacent streets were filled with an estimated 860 trick-or-treaters on Halloween night. The youngsters (and family members) found ultra-decorated yards and spookily draped homes, plenty of treats and accommodating hosts, some of who were as elaborately costumed as the youngsters.

People who kept close tabs (via hand-click counting devices) said the tally didn’t include repeaters or adults.

More than 600 youngsters and family members attended the Harvest Festival at the Community Presbyterian Church, nearby on Yorkshire.

And more than 400 people toured the Haunted House at the Cambria Fire Station on Burton Drive, according to Fire Capt. Ryan Maloney. At one point, “we had a line down to the Ascot Court cul de sac,” waiting to get into the exhibits, he said.

His estimate doesn’t include the many toddlers, preschoolers and children who were too young to handle the various shocks and surprises in the Haunted House — such as an operating-table scene with world-class screamer and a Dremel tool instead of a scalpel. Instead, tots and the squeamish were entertained by Enchanted Forest tales told by a princess-costumed Cindy Bitto.

At Cambria Grammar School earlier in the day, dozens of people attended the annual parade of costumed students. The school’s parking lots were packed with cars and some attendees had to park along Main Street or Eton Road and hike up the steep hill.

On Halloween afternoon, several dozen costumed youngsters paraded through West Village, gathering candies, applause and oooohs and ahs.
