I found the Nov. 4 article Working in a part time world very revealing as to businesses use of computer programs, which are pushing more workers into poverty. The use of scheduling software has created work shifts as short as two to three hours at varying times and days.
In the past, unions fought for overtime pay. Now employees are facing a new employer tactic to increase profits, which should be called undertime. Undertime should be paid at overtime rates, as the cost of time and transportation rises as a percentage of pay.
The scheduling of constantly changing work times and days is a hardship for employees who would like to have a second part-time job. The use of shorter work shifts and more part-time workers also creates more work trips, which is an inefficient use of the nations energy resources.
