Three incumbents re-elected to Atascadero school board

Published: November 6, 2012

Three incumbents will retain their seats on the Atascadero Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The school board race pitted current trustees George Galvan, Corinne Kuhnle and Terri E. Switzer against a newcomer, county veterans services officer Dana Cummings, the executive director of the nonprofit Association of Amputee Surfers, or AmpSurf. All three incumbents have at least a decade of experience on the board.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Kuhnle led the district, followed by Switzer, Galvan and Cummings.

The biggest challenge now facing the trustees is an uncertain state budget.

With Proposition 30, which would have temporarily raised personal income taxes to fund education, poised to fail Tuesday night, the district could be forced to make “some significant cuts” to the school year, Galvan said in October.

The board members must also contend with several upcoming building and modernization projects funded by a $117 million school improvement bond measure passed by local voters in November 2010.

Construction is now underway at Monterey Road Elementary School, while significant work is also planned for Atascadero High School, Atascadero Junior High School and the remaining elementary schools.
