Its a common misconception, much bandied about, that the American Constitution does not specify the separation of church and state, as was recently noted in a letter to the editor (Nathan Rohan, Oct. 26).
In fact, the First Amendment clearly says, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
And Article VI specifies that no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.
Thus America was not established as a Christian nation. In fact, we were specifically not so founded, since, again, there is quite pointedly no established religion and neither can one be established.
By the way, one need not be religious to be impeccably moral. Many atheists are vastly more moral than some persons who profess to be good Christians. Or as my uncle says, Thank God Im an atheist.
