Motorcyclist taken to hospital with major injuries after Hwy. 46 crash near Shandon

Published: November 2, 2012

Update: The driver of the motorcycle involved has been identified as Eric Gard of Paso Robles.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Gard, 42, was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle east on Highway 46 near the Shandon rest area at 4:35 a.m. At the same time, a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle were heading west near the rest stop.

The driver of a white 1992 Dodge leaving the rest area had stopped to yield to the westbound vehicles, but, after they passed, he turned out of the rest area and into the path of Gard.

Gard “took evasive action to avoid the van but was not successful,” the CHP wrote in a news release. He collided with the van, and Gard was thrown from the motorcycle, sustaining major injuries. He was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

The van’s driver pulled over briefly, then left, according to the CHP.

Initial post: A motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital with major injuries after a collision with a car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at 4:30 a.m. on Highway 46 at the Shandon rest area. Neither the identity of the injured individual nor any other details are available, as the CHP processes and investigates the accident.
