November includes a week of recognition for all the retired teachers. The California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), Division 23, thanks those who have taught in the past, along with those who are currently teaching.

An old saying goes: “Teachers don’t retire, they just lose their class.” That is true, especially on our Central Coast.

During the past year, local CalRTA members volunteered more than 18,000 hours, totaling more than $434,000 in saved costs to groups, agencies and nonprofits. Many teachers continue their “teaching” of students in our schools and volunteer with other seniors day and night.

This year, eight newer teachers were selected (four each from Lucia Mar Unified School District and San Luis Coastal Unified School District) to receive $100 mini-grants to help with out-of-pocket, classroom-related expenses. Teachers pay to make every year a learning experience, as well as a memorable one, for their students. Thank you to these newer teachers for choosing teaching as a career.

Now, please take a moment to think about your own school years. Take time to give your special teacher a “thank you.”
