Arroyo Grande High’s girls tennis team won all the singles sets Wednesday in opening the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs with a 17-1 rout of La Reina.

The Eagles (17-1) will play at Oakwood in Friday’s second round.

Sophie Whittle and Lauren Hayashi each won their two singles sets 6-0 before Christa Osumi and Elizabeth Mero stepped in and won one set apiece.

Alex Mero swept her singles sets 6-2 6-0, 6-0.

“We played smart and we played consistent and I knew if we did that, we could have a score like this,” Arroyo Grande coach Lori Hollister said. “I told the girls to play with as much passion as they could and the strokes and the scores would come.”

In doubles, Alexis Flood and Chelsea Pudwill won their sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Amber Demako and Zoe Miller won two doubles sets, as did the team of Aleina Rogers and Joanne Phung. Angelica Gagliano teamed with Miller to win another doubles set.

“We came out and played hard today and that’s what I wanted to see,” Hollister said.

Buckley 11, San Luis Obispo 7

The Tigers’ season came to an end on the road in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs.

San Luis Obispo (11-8) picked up five of its set wins in doubles. Lauren Hutkin and Joelle Lewis won their three sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-2. The teams of Darla Berkefeld and Courtney Gallagher, and Caroline Burke and Anna Lippold each won one set.

In singles, Maya Hoffman and Maia O’Brien each won one set for the Tigers.

CROSS COUNTRY

Los Padres League finals

At Waller Park in Santa Maria, the Morro Bay boys and the Templeton girls won the league titles and an automatic berth in the CIF-Southern Section preliminary meet Nov. 10 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Morro Bay scored 44 points to win the boys meet to 58 points for Cabrillo and Santa Ynez, which tied for second. Lompoc was fourth with 100 points, Templeton fifth with 134 and Nipomo sixth with 151.

In the girls team race, Templeton won with 46 points to 70 for runner-up Lompoc. Nipomo and Morro Bay tied for third with 75 points to 90 for fifth-place Cabrillo.

The top four teams in both the boys and girls will advance to the CIF-Southern Section prelims.

Santa Ynez’s Jacob Carey was the boys individual winner over the 5K course in 16 minutes, 19 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Cameron Hernandez of Cabrillo. Morro Bay’s Austin Lay was third in 16:33, Nipomo’s Alex Hascall was fifth in 17:04, Morro Bay’s Billy Berdin was sixth in 17:07 and Templeton’s Nick Landy was seventh in 17:07.

Nipomo’s Krya Meko was the girls individual winner in 19:31, 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Autumn Russell of Templeton, who was the winner at the LPL midseason meet earlier in the month. Templeton’s Dana Alpert was fourth in 20:12, and Nipomo’s Gracie Albano was seventh in 20:43. Morro Bay’s top finishers were Shannon McClish, who was 11^th in 21:04, and Madeline Ogle, who placed12th in 21:05.

The top six individual finishers all advance to the Southern Section prelim meet.

BOYS WATER POLO

PAC 7 Tournament

Jack Empey scored eight goals in leading Arroyo Grande to a 19-5 win over Atascadero and a 15-5 win over Paso Robles on the opening day of the tournament.

Empey scored four goals in each game. The Eagles (19-6) led 10-2 at halftime against Atascadero, and had David Vitt, Brock Johnson and Nick Valente all score three goals against the Greyhounds. Clint Doucette had four saves in goal for Arroyo Grande, and Chandler Mankins had three.

In the win over Paso Robles, Arroyo Grande led 7-1 at halftime and put the game away with seven third-period goals. Taylor Ross had three goals for the Eagles, Doucette had six saves and Mankins had three.

In other games, San Luis Obispo beat Pioneer Valley 15-5 and had a late game with Righetti, but that score was unavailable at press time. Righetti beat Pioneer Valley 20-5 earlier in the day.

Paso Robles opened with a 4-1 win over St. Joseph, which later beat Atascadero 7-4.

The tournament concludes Friday. The championship semifinals match Arroyo Grande against San Luis Obispo and Righetti against Paso Robles.
