Classes at Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus were canceled
Wednesday evening because of a power outage, but all classes will resume as
scheduled Thursday. However, campus officials said it may take longer to
restore power to the 1000 building, one of the oldest structures on
campus, and classes scheduled today in that building may be moved to other classrooms.

The outage was triggered by a problem in 40-year-old wiring that was
scheduled to be upgraded in December, according to a statement posted
on the community college’s website. PG&E is assisting Cuesta College
maintenance and operations staff in resolving the problem.

The outage started at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, and college officials
announced the decision to cancel classes about an hour later.

Campus computers were also not available, nor was access to the
student portal, myCuesta.

The outage did not affect the college’s North County campus or the
South County Center at Arroyo Grande High.

However, it did cause a problem in the college’s Children Center in
building 4000. An employee smelled smoke about 5 p.m. and alerted Cal
Fire. No students or children were in the building at the time.

Calfire determined the cause was ventilation fans that had started to
smoke after malfunctioning. The Children’s Center will reopen for
classes and child care today while repairs continue.
