Huasna — Local fire agencies and landowners will conduct a controlled burn Tuesday near Huasna, east of Arroyo Grande.

The 525-acre burn will be located approximately four miles southeast of Lopez Lake, and will involve five fire engines, one bulldozer, one helicopter and three fire crews.

Cal Fire says it is conducting the exercise as part of its vegetation management program, which intends to reduce highly flammable brush and other wild land fuels in an area prone to wildfires. It also should improve forage conditions for livestock and wildlife.

Cal Fire is working with the San Luis Obispo County Range Improvement Association. The burn is being coordinated with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District and the California Air Resources Board.

Authorities warn that residents of the Five Cities area, as well as people traveling Highway 166, may see smoke between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

They say if you do smell smoke you should reduce outdoor activities.

The project will be carried out only during favorable atmospheric conditions that provide adequate consumption and smoke dispersal. If those conditions are not correct on Tuesday, the burn will be rescheduled.
