I am writing in response to the article about the cuts to Cuesta College’s programs.

Honestly, I’d like to know why such things as physical science and geology are being cut, yet none of the math courses are being cut.

After all, according to the various schedules, such as those to get an associate’s degree or to transfer, physical science is one discipline of a group of topics referred to as “The Golden Four” that are required.

So, if cuts are going to be made, then why not cut math, too?

I don’t expect to need it, and I find it rather self-serving of those in the education field to force students to study subjects that have little or nothing to do with their degree or career goals. The Russians beat us into space; get over it.

Studying subjects that have nothing to do with my degree have forced me to be in college longer than necessary. And I’m sure I’m not the only student in this position.

This is why it now takes more than three years to get through a community college and, in some cases, more than five years to earn a bachelor’s degree.
