The Farm Bureaus claim that The National Academy of Sciences, the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association and other venerable scientific bodies have endorsed GMOs as safe is not true (Pro & Con: Prop. 37 is acostly, deceptive scheme, Sept. 28).
The National Academy of Sciences has concluded that products of genetic engineering technology carry the potential for introducing unintended compositional changes that may have adverse effects on human health.
The American Medical Association has called for mandatory safety assessments of genetically engineered foods.
Codex Alimentarius, the food standards group for the World Health Organization, also says that mandatory safety studies should be required.
As the federal government has failed to require such studies, the least the state of California can do is require the labeling of genetically engineered food.
Vote yes on Proposition 37.
