Frank Freitas, 69, suddenly retires without explanation

San Luis Obispo County Treasurer-Tax Collector Frank Freitas has retired, effective Friday.

Freitas, 69, whose term expires in January 2015, gave no reason for his sudden departure other than to say that he is “looking forward to gaining more personal time.”

He becomes the second elected county official this year to retire before filling out his term. County Auditor-Controller Gere Sibbach retired in September, although Sibbach said he would work through December. The Board of Supervisors named Jim Erb Sibbach’s successor.

Freitas’ salary was $156,000.

The Board of Supervisors will decide in upcoming weeks who will succeed Freitas.
