A popular parrot known for its ability to mimic human language died at the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero on Friday, the zoo announced.
Angel, a Yellow-headed Amazon parrot, was found by animal care staff. A necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but it could be weeks before the staff knows why the bird died.
Angel had lived at the zoo since 1999.
Yellow-headed Amazons are an endangered species native to Mexico and Central America, according to the zoo. In the wild, their numbers have plummeted from 70,000 to 7,000 in the last two decades.
