Atascadero library chandelier could be for sale soon

Atascadero library chandelier may be sold because it’s not a good fit in new facility

Looking for something to spruce up your entryway or living room? A chandelier may soon be on the market.

The county, which is working with the Friends of the Atascadero Library to design and build a new library at 6555 Capistrano Ave. in Atascadero, is looking to unload a chandelier hanging in the current digs.

The chandelier, according to a report to the Board of Supervisors from library director Brian Reynolds, “does not fit within the expected design and future use of the building.”

The large brass and crystal item hovers above the ground floor lobby, directly over the entrance.

Reynolds is asking the Board of Supervisors to declare the item surplus so he and the Friends of the Atascadero Library can sell it, using the proceeds toward the new library.

In an email to The Tribune, Reynolds said he thinks the piece is worth between $1,000 and $3,000. It cost $6,000 originally.

If the board gives them the go-ahead, library supporters will offer it for sale while it is in place, so prospective purchasers can see it. Anyone who buys it will have to move it.

“The challenge will be to make a connection in real time between a potential buyer and the chandelier, in situ, lit up, so that it looks nice,” he wrote.

If nobody bites, the county must dispose of the chandelier.

Meeting Tuesday

The Board of Supervisors’ meeting Tuesday begins at 9 a.m. at the County Government Center at 1055 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo.
