The Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf teams both won the two-day Firestone Grill Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo, which concluded Tuesday.
The men’s team finished with a 7-over 847 for three rounds, and the women’s team won with a 49-over 901 score for three rounds.
The UCLA men had the top two finishers with Jonathan Garrick shooting a 9-under 201, and Jake Knapp shooting a 205. UCLA entered its five golfers as individuals.
Cal Poly’s men finished four strokes ahead of Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs were in fifth place heading into the third round but posted the second-best, four-person, 18-hole score in school history with a 285 to win.
Grant Martens finished third with a 207, Cole Nygren and Justin Haley shot a 214, and Camden Price shot a 217.
Lisa Persson from Sacramento State was the medalist on the women’s side with a
5-over 218. Sacramento State finished in second place as a team in the seven-team field, 10 strokes behind the Mustangs.
Drew Thomas was the top-finishing Mustang in third place with a 221, one stroke off the school record. Asia Adell was fifth with a 22,2 and Morgan Thomas and Madison Hirsch of the Cal Poly “B” team were sixth and seventh with a 226 and a 227, respectively. The “B” team finished in third place, 32 strokes behind the “A” team.
