Highway 1 to close nights in Big Sur starting Sunday

Highway 1 near the north end of Big Sur will be completely closed five nights a week for four months starting Sunday, Oct. 14, Caltrans has announced.

Crews will be installing a viaduct at the site of a road slippage that closed the road for a month in the spring of 2011. During the day, traffic is subject to one-way traffic control, with delays of up to 10 minutes.

The road will close at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, reopening at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. The road will remain open to one-way traffic Friday and Saturday nights.

The project is just north of Bixby Bridge, about 14 miles north of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and 15 miles south of Carmel. Work began Sept. 4 and is expected to continue through August. The overnight road closures are expected to end by March.
