A man with gang ties was sentenced to 16 years in prison this week for his role in a Paso Robles drive-by shooting that investigators say was inspired by road rage.

Richard Qutan Garcia, 20, of Paso Robles, had pleaded no contest in August to assault with a semiautomatic firearm with a gang enhancement. He was formally sentenced in San Luis Obispo County Superior Court on Tuesday.

An accomplice, Steven Douglas Durrett, 22, of Paso Robles, had been sentenced to seven years in prison for the same offense in July.

On June 17, 2011, they shot a man as he stood on the 100 block of Santa Ynez Road, according to investigators. The shooting was believed to have stemmed from a road rage incident earlier in the day.

The victim was treated and released at a local hospital. Meanwhile, the two suspects were initially charged with attempted murder, conspiracy and participation in a criminal street gang.

According to investigators, both men were involved with a gang from King City.
