A San Luis Obispo man was arrested early this morning on suspicion of attempting to murder a neighbor in his apartment complex.

Shortly after midnight, San Luis Obispo police officers responded to a disturbance at 3350 Bullock Lane in southern San Luis Obispo, according to a news release.

Police officers say they found 59-year-old Edmund Nungaray near the open door of a woman’s apartment. In the apartment, officers found the 46-year-old female resident, who was not breathing and had no pulse.

Officers immediately detained Nungaray, began CPR on the victim and called for paramedics.

Police and paramedics re-established the victim’s pulse. She is in the intensive care unit of French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, where she is listed in critical condition, according to police.

Police say the victim and Nungaray are acquaintances but not involved in a romantic relationship. They live in separate apartments in the complex, police said.

Nungaray was booked into County Jail, with bail set at $500,000.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time because police are still trying to contact her family.
