In a recent speech to a conservative crowd, Rick Santorum said, We will never have smart people on our side. This statement may seem laughable to some, but it does reflect the state of political divisions in our country.
Why is it that intellectuals, university professors, writers, philosophers, scientists and members of the arts community tend to have liberal political leanings? It is because these so-called smart people have vision and are able to see the big picture. They usually are idealists who yearn for a world of peace and equal rights for all.
They view the human condition with compassion and wish to serve the downtrodden.
They also happen to be rational, unlike certain conservatives who refuse to acknowledge certain truths such as climate change and evolution and oppose measures that would benefit our citizens health and the environment they live in.
Santorum went on to say that it was the church and family that were at the core of conservative values, but this doesnt hold water, as there are as many strong families and churchgoers in the liberal community.
The backward thinking of certain conservative leaders is a sure sign that our great nation may well continue to be mired in mediocrity, leaving an opening for more progressive nations to surpass us.
