Fresh from opposing a modest county measure to conserve water in the rapidly depleting Paso Robles groundwater basin, here comes the Farm Bureau to tell us the sky will fall if we vote yes on Proposition 37, a modest measure to label genetically engineered foods (“Prop. 37 is costly, deceptive scheme,” Tribune, Sept. 28).

The Farm Bureau’s hysterics sound just like the talking points from the front groups funded by Monsanto, DuPont, etc. to oppose the measure, so excuse me if I don’t buy the claim of a huge spike in my food bills if a line gets added to an ingredients label. In Europe, labeling genetically engineered food “did not result in increased costs, despite the horrifying double-digit prediction of some interests,” said David Byrne, the former European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection of the European Parliament. Sorry, SLO County Farm Bureau: I think that guy knows what he’s talking about, and you don’t.

Proposition 37 is an inexpensive, straightforward measure. It’s being met with costly, deceptive opposition, which we can safely ignore.
