Politicians perpetually claim that the United States is the greatest country on earth. Is this true and, if so, what are the criteria upon which we would base such a distinction?
Certainly our freedoms make us great, especially when compared to oppressive regimes around the world. We are undoubtedly the most powerful country but does this make us great, or simply powerful?
I would argue that it is our character, our morals, our values that determine our greatness. Do we live in a country that strives to provide all of its citizens with food, housing and health care or a country where we dont care about those people who put their children to bed hungry at night or lose their homes when medical catastrophe strikes?
In this election season, the presidential candidates have each clearly staked out their position and it is left for each of us to decide what kind of country we want to live in a country striving to meet the most very basic of human needs or a country where we just dont worry about that segment of the population that sees themselves as victims.
