Morro Bay football team outscores Nipomo

Pirates even record at 3-3 with 48-34 win

Derek Viles had three touchdowns and 107 rushing yards to lead the Morro Bay High football team to a 48-34 win at Nipomo on Friday night.

Viles scored on runs of 6, 10 and 22 yards, and Tristan Collins added a 47-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter as the Pirates (3-3, 1-1 Los Padres League) ran all over the Titans (0-6, 0-2 LPL), totaling 273 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

After a scoreless first quarter, Morro Bay opened the scoring with a little trickery when Dan Beavers found Zach Smith on a 50-yard, double-reverse touchdown pass with 8:59 remaining in the second quarter.

Smith finished with four catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Pirates.

With Morro Bay leading 21-10 late in the third quarter, the Pirates scored three rushing touchdowns in a two-minute span covering the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.

The teams combined to score 37 points in the fourth quarter in what turned into a late shootout.

Morro Bay quarterback Jordan Bray completed 4 of 10 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown and ran eight times for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Titans quarterback Luke Shurtleff was 26 for 39 for 189 yards passing with two touchdowns and one interception, and Tommy Saenz had 197 yards on 22 carries for Nipomo, including touchdown runs of 54 and 23 yards.

Quintin Bland had six catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and Josh Sundberg had 11 catches for 69 yards for the Titans.
