Pet Tales: Wiener dogs race to the finish at A.G. festival

This year’s Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival will feature Wiener Dog Races (and wiener dog wannabe races) beginning at 1:15 p.m. Saturday. Registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. the day of the races; entry cost is $10. This year, the race is benefiting Foxy Doxy Dachshund Rescue. N. County Barn Tour

“Behind Closed Gates” North County Barn Tour will feature tours of Vulcan Mesa Ranch, Templeton Farms, Windfall Farms and the Estrella Equine Hospital from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Tour starts at Vulcan Mesa Ranch, 4500 Rocky Canyon Road in Atascadero. Snacks, refreshments and coffee will be served, and you will also receive maps and directions to the other barns to continue the tour of the facilities.

Woods waives fees

Through Sunday, Woods Humane Society will waive the adoption fee for felines ages four months and older. All cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Woods is at 875 Oklahoma Ave. in San Luis Obispo For more information, call 543-9316 or visit http://www.woodshumane.org.

Adopt a cat at Petco

The Feline Network holds cat and kitten adoptions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday at the Petco in the Madonna Shopping Center in San Luis Obispo. Cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, tested and vaccinated. The adoption fee if $60 for one or $80 for two. A free vet exam is included.

Dogtoberfest is back

Dogtoberfest and Wiener Dog Races return to Atascadero Lake Park on Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Event includes a free pet costume contest with cash prizes, barbecue, raffle drawings, and animal adoption groups. Race registration is $15 (pre-registration) to $20 (day-of registration) per dog and includes a racer’s goodie bag. A special race division is open to wiener wannabes (dogs of any breed under 25 pounds). Registration is available at any Lemos Feed and Pet Supply store and on race day beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Adventures with Gentle Horses children’s summer camps will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 20 at Heaven Can Wait Equine Sanctuary.

Children ages 4 to 12 will learn equine manners, safety and grooming. They will read to and walk the horses, create an art project and observe or participate with a gentle equine in a round pen event.

Heaven Can Wait is at 6275 Cerros Pioneros in San Miguel. Cost is $25 per child; for families, $15 for the first child, $10 for the second.
