Rodeo clown who made racist joke resigns as charter school superintendent

The superintendent of Excelsior Charter School, Michael Hayhurst, has resigned after making an off-color joke while working as a rodeo clown recently in Creston.

Hayhurst, who was in his third year as superintendent of Excelsior, was speaking Sept. 9 at the Creston Classic Rodeo when he made an inappropriate remark about first lady Michelle Obama. The remark, which received some media attention, was one of 75 jokes Hayhurst said he made that day. He later publicly apologized.

“It was the one that people took offense to,” Hayhurst said. “It drew a lot of opposition.”
