America’s Tire rolling into county

The company, which only does tires and wheels, will open stores in Paso Robles, SLO

America’s Tire is coming to San Luis Obispo County.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company is opening two locations — one in San Luis Obispo and the other in Paso Robles.

The San Luis Obispo store, set to open in mid- to late December, will be at 1443 Calle Joaquin at the site formerly occupied by the Starlet Café, which was demolished in the spring.

The Paso Robles store, at 2441 Golden Hill Road near the Paso Robles Lowe’s at Golden Hills Plaza, will open in mid- to late November.

About seven to 10 employees will be hired initially at each location.

“We have a store in Santa Maria, but there’s always been a gap in our market from Los Angeles north,” said Todd Richard, vice president of the company’s Los Angeles area. “Now we have the coast covered, except for Santa Barbara.”

America’s Tire operates 129 stores in California and 840 stores nationally. The stores outside of California are operated as Discount Tire.

“We strictly do tires and wheels,” said Richard, noting that the shops do not perform oil changes. “We know that time is important to our customers, and so we try to get them in and out as quickly as possible.”

The stores offer free flat repairs, air checks, tire inspections and rotations.

The company opened its first store in 1960 in Ann Arbor, Mich. About 30 to 50 stores open each year throughout the country, Richard said Richard, whose son attended Cal Poly, said he had been checking potential locations in the county for about a decade and is now “happy and excited to be a part of the community.”
