A San Luis Obispo man who repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend last summer was sane at the time of the incident, a jury found Monday, after previously finding him guilty of attempted murder.

Johnathon Charles Ramos, 22, called three people early on the morning of June 14, 2011, saying he was suicidal and headed toward the area of his ex-girlfriend’s home at The Establishment in San Luis Obispo. Soon afterward, the 26-year-old ex-girlfriend — who remained anonymous during the trial — called 911, saying Ramos had just stabbed her several times.

Suffering from at least five stab wounds, including wounds to her head and arm, the woman was taken to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Ramos, who took some pills but spit them out, was arrested later.

Charged with attempted murder, burglary, domestic abuse and assault with a deadly weapon, Ramos pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

During his trial, mental health experts expressed differing views, saying Ramos had been diagnosed with depression, borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder, said deputy district attorney Greg Devitt. Ramos told police a spirit was trying to invade his body that night.

The jury first convicted Ramos of all the counts, leading to the sanity phase of the trial, which ended with Monday’s verdict.

Ramos is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 16.
