Wyoming is preparing as if the Cowboys (0-2) will be without first-string quarterback Brett Smith after Smith was knocked unconscious while being horsecollar tackled in last weeks loss to Toledo.
Cal Poly might be fortunate not having to face the sophomore, a former freshman All-American who leads the Mountain West Conference in passing after two games and ranks in the top 20 in the country in four passing categories coming into this week.
But the Mustangs also know next to nothing about Smiths replacement, junior Colby Kirkegaard.
After Smith was taken to the hospital with a head injury late in the game against the Rockets, Kirkegaard finished up the effort going 1 for 3 for zero yards and minus-1 yards rushing on one attempt.
For a team that relies on its passing game the Cowboys have averaged more than 300 yards through the air in their first two games Wyoming needs a big contribution from its quarterback.
Will the Cowboys get it?
I dont know if he has the capability to dominate the game, Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen said. He certainly has the capability of orchestrating the offense and moving the football team. He had a good spring. He got a lot of reps in the spring. He practiced well in training camp and he practiced well this week.
Hes practiced the same offense everybody else has practiced. Thats why hes here is to run this offense. Were not going to make any drastic changes.
