Letter: Soured on SLO

Published: September 5, 2012

I no longer plan on spending leisure time or money in the city of San Luis Obispo. After being pulled over late at night to most probably establish I was sober, the San Luis Obispo Police Department issued a fix-it ticket to me for a broken headlight. The bureaucratic mess that followed while trying to resolve my ticket was overreaching and unnecessary. Safety was clearly not the issue at stake, because I discovered fix-it tickets can be paid off at a premium, without providing proof of correction.

I understand the need for the police to check on suspect motorists, but after verifying I was neither drunk nor malicious, a warning should have sufficed. I suggest the city council and San Luis Obispo Police Department weigh the benefits of their actions against the deleterious effect on future commerce.
