Some South County children spent a few hours last week glazing ceramic bowls to be used during an upcoming fundraiser for a nonprofit looking to provide a services center for homeless in the Five Cities area.
The inaugural Empty Bowls community luncheon on Sept. 27 will benefit the 5Cities Homeless Coalition.
The organization hopes to build a South County Community Services Center to provide numerous services including a health clinic, career and housing assistance, job training, laundry facilities, showers and a permanent home for South County Peoples Kitchen.
The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Patricks Catholic Church, 501 Fair Oaks Ave. in Arroyo Grande. For a $25 donation, attendees will be able to choose a handmade bowl and eat soup and bread, and take the bowl home as a reminder of the meals purpose to reduce short-term hunger and provide long-term solutions for a healthier community, according to a news release.
More than 40 local artists are also donating ceramic bowls for the event. The craft workshops for South County students were sponsored by Altrusa International of Cinco Ciudades.
