The event marked the kickoff to the symphony’s 2012-13 performance season

A sun-splashed crowd filled out the lawn at the Avila Beach Golf Resort on Sunday to enjoy the San Luis Obispo Symphony’s annual Pops by the Sea concert.

Featured were classical guitarist Jose Maria Gallardo del Rey and his wife, Anabel Garcia del Castillo, a violinist.

Gallardo del Rey and his wife joined the symphony in performing a selection from “Glosas,” a composition written by the guitarist.

Other songs performed were George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” the theme to “Romeo and Juliet” and “Lara’s Theme” from “Doctor Zhivago” by Maurice Jarre.

The auction for the conductor’s baton raised $6,800, and the baton was given to Dave Garth, former president of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce.

He then directed the orchestra in “Star and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.

The late-afternoon event marked the kickoff to the symphony’s 2012-13 performance season.
