The Templeton High football team defeated Pioneer Valley 17-13 on Friday night behind the dynamic play of senior wide receiver Andy Garrettson.
Garrettson, who was Templetons starting quarterback a season ago before switching to receiver over the summer, connected with Tobey Isbell on a 56-yard, wide receiver-reverse pass on the second play from scrimmage to stake the Eagles to the early 7-0 lead.
Quarterback Andrew Madrigal scored on a 9-yard run to even the score at 7 for the Panthers just before halftime.
Early in the third quarter, the Eagles (2-0) capped a lengthy drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Alex Elterman to Garrettson, giving Templeton the lead at 14-7.
But the Panthers answered immediately when Codie Curbin returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown. Pioneer Valley (1-1) missed the PAT, however, and the Panthers would not score again.
Elterman added a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to cushion the Eagles lead.
Elterman finished 15-for-29 passing for 127 yards and a touchdown. Garrettson had 9 catches for 74 yards and a touchdown to go with his 56-yard touchdown pass to Isbell, who finished with three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown himself.
Chris Romero led Templeton with 88 yards rushing on 19 carries.
