Nipomo High School Alumni Girls Volleyball Game: A benefit for the Delaney Lemus Scholarship Fund

Published: August 31, 2012

In honor of former Nipomo High volleyball player Delaney Lemus, who died of cancer in 2011, an alumni game will be held Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at the school’s gym as part of a fundraiser.

The first annual alumni volleyball event, which has a $5 entry fee, will raise money for the “Spirit of Sport” scholarship fund in Lemus’ name. The event also will have a raffle that includes gym and pizza prizes.

College scholarships will be given to graduating Nipomo volleyball athletes who demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic.

Coordinator Darlene Ballestero-Pirotte said that one alumni team consisting of girls volleyball players from the graduating classes of 2009 to 2011 will play the varsity, then a second alumni team with players from the 2005 to 2008 classes will play the varsity. Then the two alumni teams will play each other.

Ballestero-Pirotte said coordinators are working to line up corporate sponsors for next year.

To donate or become a sponsor, call Ballestero-Pirotte at 748-7921 or send a check in the name of the Delaney Lemus Scholarship Fund to 525 N. Thompson Ave., Nipomo, CA 93444.
