A 22-year-old Cal Poly student who suffered serious injuries while skateboarding died Thursday, according to San Luis Obispo police.

Jacob Van Staaveren, a Cal Poly senior, was injured about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday as he was riding a skateboard south on Grove Street, according to San Luis Obispo police.

Van Staaveren driver’s license shows he is originally from Kenwood, in Sonoma County, police Capt. Chris Staley said.

In a statement, Cal Poly President Jeff Armstrong said: “Our hearts go out to Jacob’s parents and sister. I so wish we could wipe away their sorrow. Losing such a promising young man as Jacob is very sad news for the entire Cal Poly community.”

Witnesses told police Van Staaveren failed to halt at a stop sign at Mill Street, and “flew through the intersection” into the path of an eastbound Chevy Silverado truck driven by 43-year-old San Luis Obispo resident Gilberto Baltazar.

Van Staaveren crashed into the driver’s side door. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Both men were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Baltazar was treated and released, Staley said.

Police initially said Baltazar might have broken his jaw, but doctors determined it was not broken, Staley said. Baltazar had some minor cuts on his face, he said.

Police have no indication that drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash.
