Two people were arrested and three houses evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a pipe bomb was found by officers conducting a probation search near The Village in Arroyo Grande.

The Sheriff’s Office removed the bomb and exploded it.

According to Tony Cipolla, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, members of the gang task force went to a house in the 200 block of Whiteley Street at around 1:30 p.m. and came upon what they believed to be a pipe bomb.

Deputies evacuated the house as well as the houses on either side, and shut down the street until the bomb squad removed the device. They re-opened the street around 4:30 p.m.

They arrested Michael Friant, 39, and Danielle Marie Grimes, 33, on suspicion of possession of methamphetamines. They are investigating the pair’s involvement with the pipe bomb.
