Victim taken to Fresno burn unit, condition critical

A bystander lifted a burning motorcycle off a pinned rider early Saturday, possibly saving the man’s life, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Michael Sumrall was riding in the 5400 block of Ontario Road, on the west side of Highway 101 south of San Luis Obispo, at about 4:30 a.m. when he collided with a deer, the report said.

The motorcycle trapped the motorcyclist and both caught on fire. Steven Gray heard the cyclist shouting for help and lifted the cycle off him, dragging him a safe distance away.

Sumrall was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center with burns to the lower half of his body, palms and eyebrows. He was transferred to the Leon S. Peters Burn Center at the Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno on Saturday morning. His condition was listed as critical as of Saturday evening.
