About 30 people gathered along Moonstone Beach Drive near Windsor Boulevard Wednesday, Aug. 15, to celebrate the completion of a 100-foot trail segment that allows users to make their way more safely from the Moonstone Beach boardwalk to the busy intersection by Highway 1. Gail Robinette, who pushed to get the trail segment completed, noted that the road shoulder had been no more than 18 inches wide, making it unsafe, especially for baby carriages, bicycles, wheelchairs, dogs and kids. “They were always out in the street,” she said. The project took six years for design and permits and about two months and $31,000 to build. The county paid $20,000 and Cambria Community Services District $11,000. Above right, Supervisor Bruce Gibson observes as Carlos Mendoza said the services district and California Conservation Corps “have a long history of building great trails in Cambria.” Mendoza, the district’s resources and facilities manager, worked alongside Corps participants to get the project done. Gibson said the ceremony celebrated “one small piece of trail, one big piece of the California Coastal Trail.”
