Construction of Atascadero’s new transit center on Capistrano Avenue is now under way, according to a news release issued by the city.

The estimated $990,000 transit hub, located next to City Hall and the future site of the city’s new library, will serve as a central drop-off and pickup spot for buses. Construction should be complete in November.

The project is funded mostly by Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by California voters in 2006. Additional funding will come from the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments and federal funds.

The outdoor center will feature sidewalk shelters, lighting, benches and bus loading stalls on the street.

The project dates back to 2008, when SLOCOG commissioned a study on city transit. In 2009, the Atascadero City Council selected Capistrano Avenue as the ideal site for the station.
