Test of Diablo Canyon emergency sirens set for Saturday

Published: August 21, 2012

San Luis Obispo County’s emergency sirens will undergo their annual full-volume test Saturday, Aug. 25.

The sirens will be sounded at noon and again at about 12:30 p.m. Each test will last from three to five minutes.

The county maintains 131 sirens arrayed around Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant from Cayucos to the Nipomo Mesa. The sirens would be used in the event of a radiation leak at the plant but can be used for other emergency situations such as wildfires and tsunamis.

The tests do not require any action from the public. In the event of a real emergency, residents are advised to go indoors and tune in to a local radio station for instructions.
