Sarah Lancaster scores late in 1-0 win over CSU Bakersfield

With five minutes left in regulation Sunday, Sarah Lancaster broke a scoreless tie with her first goal of the season, and now the Cal Poly women’s soccer team is on a winning streak.

Lancaster’s score, a put-back rebound of her own deflected shot from 4 yards out, gave the Mustangs a 1-0 victory over visiting CSU Bakersfield (0-2-0), improving them to 2-0-0 on the year after winning the home opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Lancaster scored a team-high eight goals as a true freshman last season, and the sophomore forward tied for the team high with four shots, three on goal, Sunday. Junior Cristina Farrington also had four shots, three on goal. The Mustangs had eight shots on goal total, but Roadrunners goalkeeper Tori Ornela had turned the first seven away.

It was the first shutout for Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti, who had seven saves and also got the win in Friday’s 3-1 victory at Loyola Marymount.

Cal Poly takes its unbeaten record on the road for the next two matches, visiting Nevada this upcoming Friday and Sacramento State the following Sunday. The Mustangs’ next home match is Aug. 31 against Cal at 6 p.m.
