A living classroom — conceived and built by UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County to help educate residents on sustainable landscaping practices and home gardening — will be showcased from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the group’s sixth annual Tomato Extravaganza and Plant Sale.

The Garden of the Seven Sisters, at 2156 Sierra Way in San Luis Obispo, was funded by PG&E, an Elvenia Slosson Endowment, the Fire Safe Council of San Luis Obispo County and private donations.

The demonstration garden showcases several projects, according to master gardener Tami Reece.

She said they include: turf alternatives, such as grasses and groundcovers that require little water, maintenance and mowing; and a demonstration on how to capture and manage rainwater in an urban landscape.

The garden also includes a small orchard to show how a small backyard can provide a bountiful harvest by using multi-grafted trees and multiple trees planted in the same hole, as well as a vertical garden; a “sunshine garden’’ that’s a training site for teachers and parents involved in school gardening; and a fire-safe landscaping demonstration that features a patio with various plant varieties to represent how to help defend your home during a wildfire.
