November’s general election ballot became more crowded Wednesday as candidates countywide turned in election papers to run for city councils and school boards before the filing deadline closed.

The list of city council candidates grew in both Grover Beach and Pismo Beach, giving local voters potentially five choices for two seats in each city.

In Grover Beach, two additional people will be added to the ballot: Louis A. Robles, a journeyman ironworker, and Liz Doukas White, a court reporter and businesswoman.

They join three other contenders, including current Councilwoman Karen Bright; Jeff Lee, a civil engineer who chairs the city’s Parks, Recreation and Beautification Commission; and Anita Shower, an author and consultant.

In Pismo Beach, two additional residents — Erik Howell, a Lucia Mar school district trustee, and Sheila Blake, a retired airline supervisor — decided to run for council, but City Clerk Elaina Cano wasn’t able to verify their signatures by Wednesday evening. She’ll complete the process this morning.

Other candidates include incumbent Ed Waage; property manager D.J. White, chair of the city’s Planning Commission; and Kevin Kreowski, who did not list an occupation in his filing.

Howell, who ran unsuccessfully for Pismo Beach mayor in 2006, also filed for re-election to the Lucia Mar school board. Because no one else filed to run against him or the other incumbent, Dee Santos, an election for their seats will not be held.

If elected to the Pismo Beach City Council, Howell said he would resign from the school board.

Blake has been a vocal opponent of proposed developments in the Price Canyon area. Both she and Howell support increased efforts to revitalize downtown Pismo Beach.

The races for governing boards of most of the county’s 10 school districts also took shape Wednesday.

The extended filing deadline prompted a few additional people to run for seats in a few of the county’s largest school districts, including Lucia Mar Unified and Paso Robles Joint Unified. Here’s a look at how those school board races are shaping up.

Lucia Mar

Elections will be held for two trustee areas.

Chad Robertson, a business owner and paramedic; Derek G. Carnes, a parent and administrative assistant; and Jeffrey W. Stein, a community college instructor, are running to replace incumbent Erica Reyes, who did not file election papers, in area No. 1, which covers Nipomo.

Incumbent Dawn Hinchman also did not file for re-election in area No. 2, which covers Arroyo Grande and Huasna. Vying to take her place are Edith Cajas, a retired school employee; Mike Fuller, a businessman; Vicki Meagher, a retired teacher; and Cathy Springford, a real estate broker.

Paso Robles Seven people will vie for four four-year terms on the Paso Robles school board, including incumbents Tim Gearhart and Robert Simola.

Challengers are Chris Bausch, a parent, businessman and Realtor; Nicolette Harley, a mother and real estate agent; David S. Lambert, a parent; Joel Peterson, a parent and communications director; and Joan Summers, a retired school secretary.
