Santa Maria CHP officer arrested for DUI in Arroyo Grande, police say

Published: August 10, 2012

A Santa Maria California Highway Patrol officer was arrested in Arroyo Grande on Wednesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, Arroyo Grande police confirmed Friday.

Police arrested Michael Shane Mallory, 37, of Arroyo Grande after he reportedly crashed his 2004 Ford Explorer into two parked cars around 6:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Fair View Drive.

Mallory, who was off duty at the time of the incident, was reportedly leaving home and on his way to the CHP’s Santa Maria bureau, Arroyo Grande Police Cmdr. Beau Pryor said.

No one was injured in the incident.

When police responded to the crash, officers said Mallory seemed impaired and they conducted a field sobriety test. The test eliminated alcohol as a factor in the crash but pointed to drug use, Pryor said.

Police are currently testing the type of drug, including whether it’s an illegal drug or prescription medication.

Mallory was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on Wednesday and was no longer in custody by Friday afternoon.
