The plan to move SLO Brewing Co. from its Garden Street location to Higuera Street is meeting opposition by Save Our Downtown, a small citizens group that seeks to preserve the character of the downtown.

The city’s Planning Commission approved the move with a 7-0 vote in July, but the group worries that the San Luis Creek Walk area will become an overflow area for alcohol-related activities and increased crime.

SLO Brewing Co. is hoping to relocate to 736-738 Higuera St., the former location of Central Coast Surfboards, to make way for the Garden Street Terraces project.

Much of the brewery, restaurant and music venue would be recreated at the new site, which is next to the Frog and Peach Pub, but plans also call for amenities such as a creekside patio and a rooftop patio for dining.

The business would gain 4,000 square feet at the new location, which would be used to expand the brewing capacity and kitchen area.

Save Our Downtown’s appeal includes concerns that increasing the number of alcohol venues in the downtown area threatens retail businesses and that by increasing the “geographical footprint” of alcohol-related uses, the downtown is losing its viability as a shopping destination.

The appellant also argues that the downtown’s “family-friendly ambiance” will deteriorate with the approval of too many alcohol-related uses.

The City Council will hear those concerns and decide on the move at its meeting on Sept. 4.
