4.5 magnitude quake near Parkfield rattles SLO County

Published: August 6, 2012

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 12:35 a.m. Monday near Parkfield in Monterey County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the temblor was 5 miles northwest of Parkfield at a depth of 7 miles. The San Andreas Fault runs through Parkfield, where it generates many smaller earthquakes.

A shake map on the USGS website showed the quake caused light shaking around Parkfield and weak shaking around San Luis Obispo. It was felt from Salinas to Santa Maria and as far inland as Fresno.

No reports of damage from the quake were received, said Tony Cipolla, county Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
