There’s been a lot of discussion lately—and several meetings — about what factors should be considered the most important when service district directors select another source of fresh water for Cambria.

Those criteria are to be hashed over yet again at another Cambria Community Services District workshop on Thursday, Aug. 9. This one, however, is being billed as the final workshop, at least during this phase of studying potential projects.

Organizers said they hope district directors will be given enough information at this workshop so they can edge closer to deciding which four or five of the remaining dozen or so options should be studied in depth for federal-and state-level environmental reports.

Directors also expect to hear some idea of how much some of the water sources could cost.

Among options are: various sites for seawater desalination, expanded conservation and recycling programs, local and imported surface water, groundwater, hard-rock drilling and seasonal reservoir storage, perhaps at Whale Rock Reservoir or other locations.

A representative of CDM Smith, a consultant firm working with the Army Corps of Engineers, is expected to run some criteria modeling software at the workshop, to show the public how the program works and how it was used to select project options that made the final cut.
