The San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority will receive a $2.3 million federal grant to replace six aged buses with clean-diesel buses equipped with modern technology.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s State of Good Repair Program.

The new buses will include GPS-based automatic vehicle location systems that will allow bus riders to track arrival time of buses using the Internet or smartphones.

The buses to be replaced are all from 2003 and have acquired more than 500,000 miles each, according to Geoff Straw, RTA’s executive director.

RTA provides busing throughout San Luis Obispo County and into Santa Maria.

“The new buses will incorporate several technological advances to reduce emissions to the greatest extent possible, thereby preserving the air on the Central Coast,” Straw said.

The new buses are expected to arrive sometime in the next year and a half.

The grant was announced by a local member of the House of Representatives.
