UPDATE 1:24 p.m. Wednesday: A Paso Robles man was arrested at his home Tuesday for allegedly calling in a fake bomb threat to the Arroyo Grande Walmart store the night before.

Daniel Joseph McPherson, 53, was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on a felony allegation of making a false bomb threat. Bail was set at $10,000.

Arroyo Grande police worked with Walmart staff and AT&T investigators to trace the call to McPherson. In a news release, Arroyo Grande police said McPherson had heard recent news reports about bomb threats called in to Walmart stores across the nation. "No evidence was uncovered indicating McPherson was involved in any of these other bomb threats," police said.

Arroyo Grande Police Chief Steven N. Annibali said, “It is important for people to know that we take threats like this very seriously, and we will aggressively pursue any suspects. This type of conduct is very disruptive to the community.”

Original story: A bomb threat Monday night led to the evacuation of the Walmart store in Arroyo Grande.

The Five Cities Fire Authority was called to Walmart in Arroyo Grande on Monday night after a bomb threat was made by phone. The store was evacuated after an unidentified man called the store around 9 p.m., said there was a bomb inside, and hung up.

The Five Cities Fire Authority staged in the 900 block of Rancho Parkway and the Sheriff’s Office was notified that the bomb squad might be needed.

A request was also made with the California State Parks for assistance with bomb sniffing K-9. Police officers and key Walmart personnel searched the premises for any devices but didn’t find any. The Arroyo Grande Police Department is investigating who might have made the call.
